Endangered Wildlife Trust group wins Kudu award

At the recent, prestigious Kudu Awards ceremony, the Endangered Wildlife Trust’s Conservation Leadership Group (CLG) was recognised for its outstanding work in capacity building and environmental education, and its contribution to conservation in rural communities.

At the recent, prestigious Kudu Awards ceremony, the Endangered Wildlife Trust’s Conservation Leadership Group (CLG) was recognised for its outstanding work in capacity building and environmental education, and its contribution to conservation in rural communities.

The was the overall winner in the category Group Environmental Education and Capacity Building and won a merit award in the category Community Contribution to Conservation. he Kudu Awards were introduced by the South African National Parks (SANParks) in 2003 to recognise and reward external stakeholders for excellence in conservation.

The kudu-head trophy was designed by Phil Minaar. he CLG received the award for its four educational programmes: the Rural Eco-Warriors, the Tracker Training Project, the Leadership Programme and the Conservation Programme. he CLG set up programmes to assist students from disadvantaged backgrounds in their Nature studies at tertiary level.

At a senior level the students participate in the programmes through internships in order to cultivate practical skills and work ethics; rural-based training programmes to train students in tracking and field guiding; and the Warriors programme which involves members of local communities who engage their community members in the interest of conservation. E arlier this year the Rural Eco-Warriors also won the Mail & Guardian’s Greening the Future Awards, in the category Water Care. – Roelof Bezuidenhout

Birthday bull sets a world record

A British dairy sire has entered the international record books by producing more sexed semen than any other bull in the world. he Holstein bull Crichel Principal has notched up 116 000 straws of sexed semen to date, which his owners Cogent Breeding Ltd said puts him far ahead of his nearest rival. He combines this milestone with a celebration of his 13th birthday this month. he bull’s accomplishment has been achieved through a combination of his own high fertility – at his prime he was producing semen seven days a week – and the widespread demand for his daughters both in the UK and worldwide. – Alan Harman
