Between these two men and Oupa Flip exists a close bond built on mutual trust, respect and, dare we say it, love. At 83, Oupa Flip had a stroke and Daniel and Julius sat next to his hospital bed, crying. Oupa Flip is very fond of Daniel and more than once he would not listen to any one of us (his children), but he would listen to Daniel.
Hardly able to speak or even stand, his wish was to see his Red Bonsmaras on his farm Erfdeel one more time, while he was still able to. With the help of Daniel and Julius we granted his wish.
Oupa Flip is now living in the old-age home Rusoord in Vryburg. Although he will never again be able to go to the farm as usual, he still loves it. Daniel visits Oupa Flip at least once a week at the old-age home. We look after the farm now and if it wasn’t for Daniel’s input we would not have been able to keep the farm going.
Daniel has been working on the farm since 1997 and Julius since 1999. They keep their own cattle and donkeys on the farm. Daniel often tells us that Oupa Flip taught him everything he knows about cattle and often gives us advice on what to do.
