Good times at the Royal Show

The Royal Show held in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal from 25 May to 3 June was a resounding ­success. According to the Royal Agricultural Society’s general manager Terry Strachan, the Royal Show
has become the largest show in the country, incorporating a fully represented agricultural component.
This year ­attendance figures reached 170 353 people. Lloyd Phillips captured some memorable moments.

1. As skinny as he is, Christof Mbanjwa of Pietermaritzburg, was able to lift an 85kg log to this point, greatly impressing the Farmer’s Weekly-sponsored strongmen and the audience at the 2007 Royal Show.
2. Members of the KwaZulu-Natal Brahman Club enjoy some warming liquid sustenance at their clubhouse at the Royal Showgrounds on a cold winter’s evening.
3. Boys from Zakhe Agricultural College in Baynesfield, KwaZulu-Natal, participated in the Youth Show ­section of the Royal Show. Here they can be seen enjoying the warmth of a fire before tucking into some grub.
4. Fat Foot, South Africa’s answer to America’s world-renowned monster truck, Big Foot, thrills the crowds at the 2007 Royal Show by climbing on to, and effectively flattening, two scrapped cars.
5. Chris Burgess, Farmer’s Weekly editor, had an opportunity at the 2007 Royal Show to meet up with Barry Smith, the author of the hugely popular book The Farming ­Handbook. Barry told Chris that the book was now also available for purchase online at www.kalahari.net, in addition to being available from the University of KwaZulu-Natal Press.
