The livelihood protection baskets extended by government comprise basic services such as education, health and agricultural inputs. At least 10 000t of maize and some R60 million are needed to bring relief. A cabinet statement said, “the effects of extreme weather conditions are mostly felt by the very poor in society due to their limited capacity to cope with such events”. According to the statement, the situation is exacerbated by socio-economic and environmental issues such as poverty, disease and increases in commodity prices.
