Brazil, the US, China and European Commission recently launched a joint initiative to create a world market to increase the production, distribution and use of biofuels. US assistant secretary of state for western hemisphere affairs, Thomas Shannon, said the initiative is a huge step forward in the development of a new international understanding of energy. “By working together we will be able to identify means and ways to help countries with agricultural productive potential to become major energy suppliers,” he said. Brazil’s ambassador to the US, Antonio Patriota, said the introduction of biofuels is highly advantageous for both developing and developed countries. – Wilma den Hartigh
