Falcon Agricultural Equipment, based in Howick, has a reputation for developing unique machines to meet specific customer needs. Their latest implement is a finishing mower designed especially for the high-speed cutting of sports grounds, golf courses, turf farms and large areas of recreational grass. Joe Spencer reports.

The all-new Falcon Finishing Mower has some really innovative features, the major one being the toothed-belt drive system. This prevents any belt slip, the main problem with existing wide multihead mowers. The positive drive to the 24 high-speed blades mounted on four double discs means that the blades can overlap, preventing gaps and stripes. An ingenious arrangement of gearboxes means that the cutting discs rotate to both the left and right and the ingenious two-level blade system effectively mulches the cuttings and spreads them over the full width of the machine. This means the finely cut grass can be left on the field to desiccate, returning essential nutrients to the sod. This is particularly important when the unit is used for the maintenance of turf for the instant lawn industry. The new mower will be marketed though Falcon’s countrywide dealer network. Falcon F215 finishing mower specifications:
Each of the four contrarotating, double disc cutting assemblies has six blades set at two different heights. This means that the grass is cut and mulched at the same time. It runs on full width rollers, which can be adjusted to control the height of cut from zero to 60mm. Cutting width is 2,16m. The slotted top link mounting allows the unit to closely follow contours and the short length between the rollers reduces scalping. The mower is supplied complete with a PTO shaft with overrun clutch. Entirely manufactured by Falcon in Howick, the unit appears to be competitively priced when compared to imported machines, especially at current exchange rates.

Cutting in damp conditions
The unique design of the cutting assembly means that the Falcon mower can operate in less than ideal conditions. This is vitally important when it’s necessary to mow damp sports grounds, such as this cricket pitch, at regular intervals, regardless of the prevailing weather.
