The opening sale of the summer 2007 mohair marketing season did not meet expectations, although the market indicator compares well with the closing sale of the 2006 winter season, said Mohair SA. H owever, Pierre van der Vyver of Cape Mohair and Wool said demand remained good with price levels for all types virtually unchanged, in line with predictions after the last sale in December. “Competition for particularly fine young goat hair (28 to 30 micron) was very active and we saw an upward flickering in the demand for super-fine kids’ hair. The PureCape binned lots again performed very well, achieving the highest prices in all age categories. This includes the highest price of the day – R140/kg for a bin bale of Pure Cape kid hair,” he said. Van der Vyver said prospects for the rest of the season look promising. “Prices of long super-fine kid mohair should gradually improve when bigger volumes become available. The emphasis will be on good length. Although there was a slight resistance to the price of adult mohair, demand remains good,” he said. M ohair SA’s market indicator for the first sale is: (previous sale in cents in brackets:) Kids’ mohair 97,96 (99,66); young goats 78,37 (74,88); fine adults 65,36 (65,96); adults 64,25 (64,73); overall 70,74 (70,56). – Roelof Bezuidenhout
