In line with forecasts, the latest mohair sale saw a major upward swing in the fine young goat and the long, fine summer kid component of the clip, said Pierre van der Vyver, general manager of mohair at Cape Mohair and Wool (CMW). “Even the price of adult mohair showed a slight improvement,” said Van der Vyver. “The two EGT tested bales of young-goat hair from Lops Steyn of Cradock sold for R230/kg and Willie Jordaan, also from Cradock, got R215/kg – new records for that type of mohair. CMW’s Pure Cape binning department achieved the highest price of the day for a bale of summer kid mohair, R249,50/kg.”

Although the next offering of mohair is fairly big, Van der Vyver thinks the adult component of the clip has stabilised. “When the better length kid becomes available later in the season there might be a further increase in price. We also expect the short mohair, which battled to sell, to start to move by then,” he added. T his was the second sale of the 2008 summer season and Mohair SA described it as positive because of good competition for a limited offering of good-quality summer kid mohair – also taking into account the devaluation of the SA currency. he overall market indicator increased by 6% from the previous sale, closing at R68,59. Compared with previous sales the prices were as follows: kid increased by 15%; young goats increased by 2%; fine adults unchanged; strong adults increased by 3%. – Roelof Bezuidenhout
