Mohair sold well at the fourth sale of the winter selling season, considering the strengthening of the rand since the previous sale and the current turmoil in the world economy, said CMW’s mohair manager, Pierre van der Vyver.

“There was more interest out of Europe for the finer component of the clip, with local processors absorbing the stronger component of adults and strong young goats,’’ he said.

“This small recovery in the market after the recent losses was mainly due to the fact that the better qualities are now being delivered and most of this season’s offering has already been sold. This bodes well for the rest of the winter selling season, although the focus will still be on the finer microns (31 micron and finer).”

Mohair South Africa (MSA) said the 120 105kg on offer had better length and good quality, especially the kid’s mohair.

“Although there is still concern over the market in Europe, signs are emerging that the demand for kid’s hair is on the increase,” said MSA’s general manager, Deon Saayman. “It’s also encouraging that the current average price is 25% higher than the corresponding sale of 2010.”

In total, 96% of the offering was sold, with an average market indicator of R88,40/kg. This is 1% higher than the previous sale. A highest price of R241/kg was paid for a bale of 25 micron good style winter kid mohair.

The price of winter kids increased by 4% with a market indicator of R157,16/kg and a 100% sale clearance. Winter young goat rose 1,5% with a market indicator of R97,04/kg and a sale clearance of 99%. Adult mohair was unchanged with a market indicator of R71,80/kg and a sale clearance of 99%. The overall sale clearance was 99% and the overall market indicator was R93,64/kg – an increase of 2%.
