The Commission on Restitution has announced that Limpopo land claims commissioner Mashile Mokono has agreed to withdraw his resignation which was to be effective from February 2007. “It is indeed true that I have withdrawn my resignation and intend to stay on and head this process of land restitution in Limpopo,” Mokono said in a statement.

Land and agriculture minister Lulama Xingwana undertook to bring about fundamental change in the processing of land claims and the service conditions of staff in the commission. She said various incentives will also be investigated.
She agreed to delegate powers to approve and finalise land claims to the chief land commissioner and the regional commissioners. This, she said, will assist in speeding up the finalisation of land claims in all provinces.
“I believe that with the new delegations and possibly improved service conditions we are able to see the light at the end of the tunnel,” Mokono said. – Staff reporter
