No new El Niño

Reports that a new kind of El Nino will follow the current La Nina are incorrect, according to Johan van den Berg, climatologist at Santam.

“The only difference is that the centre of El Niño is not in the same position any more,” he said. “We’re currently experiencing a La Niña, with sea temperatures in the central Pacific around 2°C cooler than normal, and it’s likely this whole season will be a La Niña, until March, April next year.” This means spring rains will be slow and good rainfall can be expected in the second half of October, especially in the central to western areas of South Africa.
