The US’s growing thirst for South African wines was given a major boost when Durbanville Hills was chosen as the exclusive brand for the Pan-African Inaugural Celebration Ball, held in honour of President Barack Obama in Arlington, Virginia on 20 January. The Durbanville Hills Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinotage were served to the high-profile guests at this prestigious event. A spokesperson for the estate, Linda Strydom, said the event’s sponsors asked the winemaker’s US office to suggest wines for the occasion. Durbanville Hills was nominated, and when it got the final approval, the wines were shipped to the US importer’s warehouse in the state of Maryland.
