There are ABOUT 37 Pigeon Races on the calendar of the 2008 Transvaal Pigeon Federation (TRPF). Most of them are double races which means two different race events are scheduled on the same Saturday. The first started on 7 June from Winburg (278km), while the final event will be on 11 October, from Matjiesfontein (1 063km).The programme makes provision for a series of short, middle and long distance races.

One of the two races held each Saturdays is reserved for yearlings only, while the second is open to pigeons of any age. Of the twelve races in the short-distance series the first two didn’t count for points. Most of the TRPF races at the start of the season are fast-paced, because of the prevailing southwesterly winds that bring the cold (and the pigeons) into Gauteng.

Winners of the short distance yearling series
To avoid confusion, the races for yearlings are marked as Young Birds (YB) on the results sheet, and include pigeons not older than a year and rung with identity rings issued in 2007 and 2008. The results are combined from the 15 clubs that form the TRPF and there are 100 positions allocated in each race.
