Crossbreeding with indigenous cattle breeds – a scientist’s expert advice

Southern Africa’s indigenous cattle breeds are superbly adapted to this region’s harsh conditions. Imported beef breeds are renowned for their size and beefiness. Crossbreeding the two types therefore makes sense, as it can produce the best traits of both. But how can farmers achieve this optimally?

In this video, Farmer’s Weekly editor Janine Ryan speaks to Georgette Pyoos, a cattle breeding and genetics researcher at the Agricultural Research Council (ARC), to get her insights on this important and challenging subject.

Pyoos outlines how the hardiness, disease resistance and heat tolerance of indigenous breeds, and the growth rate and quality meat of imported breeds can be maximised in crossbreeding programmes.

Pyoos also highlights ongoing research conducted by the ARC into cattle breeding and genetics to support the growth and success of the industry.
