Beware of irresponsible use of chemicals against armyworms

CropLife SA cautioned farmers to make sure that they used the correct insecticides against African armyworm following outbreaks in Potchefstroom, Letsitele and Windserton.

The organisation’s spokesperson, Dr Gerhard Verdoorn, said it was essential to only use prescribed products in order to protect indigenous migrant bird species such as white storks, Abdim’s storks and kestrels, as well as reptile species to prevent an ecological disaster.

“Birds such as the storks prey on these insects and play a vital role in keeping outbreaks in check,” said Verdoorn.
