Cele asks South Africans to give food

South Africa’s deputy agriculture minister, Bheki Cele, has asked people with access to food to give to those that are in dire need.

He spoke at the launch of Food Security Month, a government initiative to focus attention on food access, near Vanderbijlpark in Gauteng today.

About 12 million people in the country of 53 million do not know where their next weal will come from, he said. The country is faced by an imminent food crisis, according to him.

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has established a Food Mountain Initiative encouraging people to buy extra food, especially non-perishable goods such as canned meat and canned fruit, he said.

The initiative will be unveiled on 16 October in the Vhembe District Municipality in Limpopo, where all the food parcels and cans will be distributed to people in municipalities that experience food strain, Cele said
