Lloyd Collett of Amadlelo Agri – a commercial farmer-driven empowerment company – emphasised that commercial success would be the focus of the Fort Hare Piggery Trust project, with research and training taking a secondary role. “We have an obligation to Fort Hare to use it as a training facility,” said Pillip von Memerty of Number Two Piggeries.

“But this will only commence in a year or two after staff had been trained to operate the piggery effectively.”Collett said that Number
Two Piggeries, via a R10 million bank loan, would manage the concern and provide the livestock. “Number Two Piggeries is providing all the stock, pre-operating costs and the university the infrastructure,” he said. The operation, consisting of a breeding site as well as a fattening site, will receive breeding stock this month.
