“Fracking” may go ahead in the Karoo

The South African government has lifted a moratorium on shale gas exploration in the Karoo, Reuters reported.

The controversial extraction technique known as "fracking" is considered. The minister in the presidency, Collins Chabane told reporters that Cabinet endorsed a recommendation of the report on the lifting of the moratorium. The Cabinet imposed the moratorium in April of last year. Environmentalists and farmers are opposed to fracking because they say it will harm the environment.
