More than 2 500 delegates at the recent Land Tenure Summit proposed that government have a moratorium on the acquisition of land in foreigners’ possession.

The proposal came after Agriculture minister Nkwinti told delegates that ownership of land by foreigners was ‘a big problem’.
There was a need for the establishment of a Land Rights Ombudsman to properly monitor and evaluate the land reform process, said one of the summit’s discussion groups.

A further proposal was that some form of compensation for land expropriation should be paid. While presenting their proposals, discussion groups said they were concerned about illegal evictions of farmworkers on farms and called on government to intervene.
