Minimum wage increase of 7,7% for farmworkers

The labour department has announced a 7,7% increase in the minimum wage for farmworkers with effect from 1 March 2015.

According to a statement by the department, farm workers will earn a minimum wage of R2 606,78/month, an increase of R180 from R2 420,41 in 2014/2015, a weekly minimum wage of R601,61, a daily rate of R120,32 and an hourly rate of R13,37

The new sectoral determination level will be applicable until 29 February 2016.

“The sectoral determination broadly deals with the protection of workers involved in farm activities. The determination regulates minimum working hours, minimum wages, number of leave days and termination rules,” said the department.

In 2012/2013 farm workers in De Doorns, Western Cape, embarked on a violent protest for better wages.
