Mohair records broken, again

The mohair market performed well on the fifth sale of the winter season in Port Elizabeth, when 96,6% of the 129 591kg on offer was sold.

According to Mohair SA’s general manager, Deon Saayman, the offering consisted of good quality mohair with excellent individual clips. The market indicator gained 2% to close on R123,08/kg. Compared with the previous sale, kids’ mohair (winter) were unchanged; young goats (winter) was up 1,4%, fine adults was unchanged, and strong adults was up 1,6%.

Pierre van der Vyver, manager of CMW’s mohair department, said there had been good demand for mohair, despite the recent strengthening of the rand. “The 25 microns and finer kids performed well, with excellent demand and a new world record price for an EGT-tested winter kids’ bale of R440,10/kg from producer Barries Snijman of Vleikuil Boerdery, Rietbron, and buyers’ house, Samil. As a result, the average CMW kids’ indicator reached the highest level ever at R265,34/kg.”

An EGT clip, from Phlippie Retief of Boksfontein Boerdery, Murraysburg, set a new national record for a total clip average of R233,34/kg. CMW’s market indicators were: kids’ mohair, R265,43/ kg; young goats’, R151,62/ kg; and adult hair, R89,76/ kg.
