Farmers in Mpumalanga are grateful for the widespread rain they have received in recent weeks. Agri Mpumalanga reported that all farming sectors were looking forward to a promising summer production season.

Although, hail had damaged small areas of maize and soya crops in the province’s Highveld area, the maize was still young enough to recover, while most of the soya crops were insured.

“Grazing is coming along fine and the prospects for haymaking are looking good,” said Agri Mpumalanga’s general manager, Hennie Laas. “The wool price is looking good but meat prices are well below expectations.”

He added that in the Lowveld/Onderberg area sugarcane production was on track, nut farmers were optimistic about their crops, and most fruit farmers were receiving good returns.
