Red Meat Producers Organisation condemns illegal smuggling

The National Red Meat Producers Organisation (RPO) says the attempted illegal smuggling of game into South Africa is a concern as it increases the risk of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD).

In a statement the RPO condemned the latest two incidents where smugglers tried to bring sable from Zimbabwe and Zambia into SA. This is a concern for the industry in light of the recent outbreaks of FMD in Zimbabwe, Mozambique Namibia and Zambia.

SA has been a FMD-free zone since February 2014 and the RPO said it is critical for the local red meat industry to maintain this status. Since February last year the export of red meat, dairy, game and fibre products as well as genetic material has increased. Such imports make a viable contribution towards producer prices and the economy.

The RPO commended Zimbabwean and Zambian authorities for arresting the suspects and requested that they receive hefty sentences if they are found guilty.
