World Food Day was created by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation to raise awareness about hunger and encourage countries to find solutions to this global crisis.

The theme for 2015 is ‘Social protection and agriculture’. In a statement the World Farmers’ Association (WFA) said that farmers play a critical role in creating food-secure communities.

Agricultural production must increase by 60% globally to meet the food requirements of 9,2 billion people by 2050, said the FAO. To meet this challenge farmers need access to infrastructure, credit, science and functioning markets, said the WFA.

According to non-profit organisation FoodBank South Africa, a third of all food produced in South Africa goes to landfill sites. This in a country where more than 11 million people go hungry every day.
