The Boran is the ideal choice for a commercial beef cattle producer intent on producing meat sustainably and profitably, according to Francois Smith, president of the Boran Cattle Breeders’ Society of South Africa.
One of the breed’s most impressive traits is its ability to keep and maintain body condition despite the circumstances.
“With the Boran, it is possible for red meat producers to finish animals grown on the veld at between 45 and 60 days in the feedlot. This makes it possible for producers to retain the competitive edge,” he said.
The breed’s resilience and low maintenance means that farmers can produce meat more cost effectively, thus improving their bottom lines.
“The Boran’s outstanding capability to hold its own plays a determining role in mitigating ever-increasing input costs.
“Its very strong herd instinct makes it easy to manage under extensive conditions. Remember, the breed was bred in Africa for African conditions,” said Smith.
According to him, the Boran is known for its adaptability and elasticity and can be found anywhere from Kenya down to the Southern Cape of South Africa.
