Cleaning with bacteria can be good for you – and the environment

The thought of bacteria has most people fearing for their health. However, according to Larry Lachman, co-owner of Pinetown-based Soft Chemical Laboratories, the manufacturers of the ProBac biogenic range of “living” bacterial domestic and industrial cleaning products, this should not be the case.

The growing influence of biotechnology in the cleaning chemicals industry is gaining ground in scientific circles, with new hi-tech discoveries in applied microbiology occurring daily. ProBac biogenic technology is an environmentally preferable alternative to traditional cleaning chemicals.

Traditional chemicals use abrasive or solvent action only to remove and wash away accumulations of waste. This method of cleaning simply relocates waste back into the environment as a hazardous pollutant/chemical mix. Lachman explains that ProBac works in the same way as traditional chemicals do, but includes a unique biogenic element in the form of concentrated “beneficial” bacteria, or pro-bacteria, as the key feature of the formulation.

The effectiveness of ProBac is due to its unique ability to biodegrade waste as opposed to simply moving waste from one place to another. Lachman bemoans the wrongful classification of all bacteria as “hazardous to human health” in the mind of the consumer. “The truth is that harmful bacteria represent a tiny percentage of all known strains, and the overwhelming majority do not cause disease, but are rather hugely beneficial to the sustainability of life,” he says. “Nature actually thrives on the availability of beneficial bacteria to biodegrade all forms of waste, and the reality is that the methodology of cleaning by eradicating bacteria has resulted in a massive retardation of this very necessary process. “It is non-toxic and safe to use, and will set the standards for environmental best practice for many years to come.”
