A R3 million purpose-built trading hub for goat traders in Ezimbuzini, KZN, due to open in December, will catapult traders into the 21st century. There are facilities for 20 traders, who will each have a 20m² lock-up facility and a fenced trading area. There will be 24-hour security, a cleaning contractor, parking bays and loading zones. The secure lock-up-and-go facility means goats can be left overnight, saving traders after-hours transport costs. Samson Chiya, area manager for eThekwini’s South Durban Business Support Unit, said upgrading this age-old business was long overdue. “The goat traders struggled against livestock theft and disease in the old environment, and the goats were running all over the road. Traders will finally be able to trade professionally and under hygienic conditions.” The hub has been strategically placed next to a muti market to take advantage of cultural practices associated with goat trading. “The goat is very important to our beliefs and culture as it is the only animal that can be used for sacrifices,” Chiya said. The cost of the facility breaks down to R150 000 per trader. While Chiya could not give annual turnover figures, he believes the market is big enough to justify the expense. – Robyn Joubert
