Agriculture sector urged to implement energy saving plans

The agriculture sector can make a significant contribution to energy savings in the private sector by increasing energy use efficiency in primary and secondary production processes.

This was according to one of the speakers at the Poultry Buzz seminar on 21 October at the Saint George Hotel, Irene, in Pretoria.

Rosalind dos Santos from the National Business Initiative, a non-profit organisation, appealed to the agriculture industry to implement energy saving plans to save money and mitigate the country’s energy crisis.

She said the organisation’s private sector energy efficiency programme had successfully identified nearly 12 000GWh of energy saving opportunities from over 750 companies, 30% of which were in the agriculture industry.

Management actions, process heating and cooling, renewables and motors accounted for 60% of energy savings, according to Dos Santos.
