West Rand state veterinarian, Dr Jason Mpofu, said that the two recently confirmed cases of rabies in pet dogs in Krugersdorp West were responsible for the intensification of the campaign.

“All private veterinarians in Krugersdorp, as well as the veterinarians in areas like Muldersdrift, Oaktree, Lammermoore, Lanseria and Broederstroom, will vaccinate pets at a reduced fee of R50 throughout November 2016,” he said.

Since May 2016, 33 cases of rabies were reported in the greater Mogale City area, mainly in the Cradle of Humankind and Muldersdrift/Lanseria areas.

  • Immediately visiting a local clinic or doctor if bitten or scratched by a dog, cat, or wild animal;

  • Vaccinating all his/her pets against rabies.

The community was also urged to bring all pets older than three months for a free vaccination at the following locations between 11h00 and 17h00:
