Six-bedroom elegance

Dear Jonno
I am a regular reader of Farmer’s Weekly and have been impressed with your designs. I’m working abroad but am considering retiring back home in Zimbabwe. I want to build a nice home with up to six bedrooms and would like the building to be single storey. I will have access to reasonably cheap bricks and if I require extra space I may also consider building rondavels on the property. Do you have any interesting designs to suggest?

Greetings Davidson
Thanks for the brief description of your requirements. It is not often that I receive a request for a six- bedroom home on one level, so I’ve put my imagination to the test. In the layout, I’ve shown the house as ‘three-angled’ to add some character, instead of just a long rectangular shape.

The bedrooms are on either side of the central open-plan living area. This allows for privacy if two families were to share the space. It also allows for the house to be built in stages, by leaving off one of the bedroom sections to start with. There are plenty of options, and garages can even be added at the kitchen end.

As for the styling, I have opted for something conventional, but with a pseudo-Tuscan twist. Let me have any further thoughts or suggestions.
