Dear Paul
Thanks for the sketch and photos of your recently-acquired farm and house. From our phone conversation, I gather you want to extend the accommodation and re-roof it with thatch. The 9,2m width of the home is convenient for the construction of a thatch roof. This leaves the verandas uncovered. I’ve shown them with pergola beams, which can be over-clad with translucent sheeting to keep the rain off and let the sun in.
Shown here are thatching features to transform a plain, bulky thatch roof into something more aesthetically appealing. The area over the living room will be open-beamed with a horizontal ceiling over the existing bedroom section. This will allow another room to be created in the attic roof space. The additional area can also be open-beamed.
The existing kitchen was cramped, so I extended it by way of the existing adjacent small bedroom. It is an open-plan integrated with the living area. Feel free to change any aspect to suit your requirements; the additions and alterations are in red.
Best regards
Jonno
