Due to their popularity, Bonsmaras have fetched high prices at auctions for many years. In this article, we list some of the highest prices achieved at sales.

R2,1 million Bull

Seller: Phillip Poggenpoel, Poggenpoel Molopo Bonsmaras
Buyers: Baszohn Bonsmaras.

In June 2022, Phillip Poggenpoel of Poggenpoel Molopo Bonsmaras sold the bull BBM 18 25 for a record price of R2,1 million at the Poggenpoel Molopo Bonsmara Production Sale. The bull was sold to Baszohn Bonsmaras, owned by cousins Eben Basson and Wessel Ebersohn, in Mooi River.

R,1,8 million Bull

Seller: Derek and Tutu Ralfe, Up George Bonsmaras, Wasbank.
Buyers: André van der Heyde, Nico Pieterse, Surina Smal, Ben Bosch, Andries Kruger, Paul Maré and Christoff Smit.

In July 2018, Derek and Tutu Ralfe of Up George Bonsmaras sold the bull LAR 14 173 for a record price of R1,8 million at the 20th annual production sale of Up George Bonsmaras held near Wasbank in KwaZulu-Natal. The bull was sold to a consortium
of seven breeders: André van der Heyde, Nico Pieterse, Surina Smal, Ben Bosch,
Andries Kruger, Paul Maré and Christoff Smit.

According to the Ralfes, the bull’s attributes included a good build, a superb maternal line, excellent performance measurements, and proven siring ability.

R500 000 Bull

Seller: Dr Joggie Briedenhann, Hartebeestloop Bonsmara, Namibia.
Buyer: Christo Botha, Maracay Investments, Namibia.

In June 2013, Dr Joggie Briedenhann of Hartebeestloop Bonsmara in Namibia sold a bull (registration unknown) to Christo Botha of Maracay Investments in Namibia for N$500 000 (around R500 000 in 2013). Adjusted for inflation, this bull would have sold for around R745 500 in 2022.


 

R550 000 3-in-1

Seller: Derek and Tutu Ralfe, Up George Bonsmaras, Wasbank.
Buyer: Eloff and Stephen Muller, Tambaraine Bonsmaras, Mossel Bay.

In March 2022, a new South African record for a 3-in-1 Bonsmara cow was achieved by the cow LAR 18 236 when she was sold by Up George Bonsmaras to Eloff and Stephen Muller of Tambaraine Bonsmaras for R550 000 during the National Bonsmara Sale in Parys.


 

R540 000 Bull

Seller: Nick Serfontein, Sernick Bonsmaras, Edenville.
Buyer: Dr Joggie Briedenhann, Hartebeestloop Bonsmara, Namibia.

At its 42nd production sale in June 2020, Sernick Bonsmaras sold the bull NFS 18 147 to Dr Joggie Briedenhann of Namibia for R540 000. Bulls achieved an average price of R122 000.


 

R250 000 Bull

Seller: Vlakte Bonsmara Group, Springbok Flats.
Buyer: Derek and Tutu Ralfe, Up George Bonsmaras, Wasbank.

In October 2020, Derek and Tutu Ralfe of Up George Bonsmaras bought the bull LFR 17 124 from the consortium Vlakte Bonsmara for R250 000.


 

R220 000 3-in-1

Seller: Arthur de Villiers, AG Bonsmara, Vrede.
Buyer: Johan Goosen, G10 Bonsmaras, Burgersdorp.

At the March 2022 National Bonsmara Sale, Arthur de Villiers of AG Bonsmara sold the 3-in-1 cow AG 18 082 to Johan Goosen of G10 Bonsmaras for R220 000.


 

R200 000 In-calf heifer

Seller: Derek and Tutu Ralfe, Up George Bonsmaras, Wasbank.
Buyer: André van der Heyde, Boschoek Bonsmaras, Bela-Bela.

The National Bonsmara Sale in Parys in March 2022 saw the in-calf heifer LAR 19 141 sell for R200 000 when she was bought by André van der Heyde of Boschoek Bonsmaras. This is a new South African record.
