The year has finally come to an end and, in my final editorial for 2024, I want to wish all our loyal readers a very merry Christmas.

May you find peace and happiness among your friends and families as you celebrate the festive season.

Predictions are that 2025 is not going to be an easy year (is any year ever really easy?) but South Africans are robust and resilient.

We have many challenges in this country, but the good far outweighs the bad, and through unity and community, I believe the country can and will become ever stronger.

Godspeed as we enter the new year and, as always, until we meet again, happy farming!
Janine Ryan – Editor

As we count down the last days of what has been a rough year, not just for agriculture but for South Africa and the world at large, my wish is for each of us to take a step back and be grateful for what we have, mourn what we have lost, and cherish those who walk the road alongside us.

Is that not what the festive season is all about – to regroup, spend time with those who matter, and remind ourselves what we are working for and working towards?

This will enable us to enter 2025 with newfound courage and strength to be better, stronger and more resilient versions of ourselves.
Gary Wium – General manager

I wish you a joyful Christmas and a prosperous New Year! As we celebrate, we reflect on the strength of South Africa‘s agriculture sector.

In 2025, we hope for more support for smallholder farmers, sustainable farming practices to tackle climate challenges, and the growth of technology to improve the industry.

May the year ahead bring progress, collaboration, and food security for all.

Thank you for your continued support; here‘s to a bright future for agriculture and our nation!

I hope the La Nina weather pattern features as strongly as meteorologists have predicted, so that ample rain falls over production areas at the right time and farmers can have their early morning coffee on their verandas with a happy gaze over their fields, without having to worry about dry crops.

I also hope that many more lucrative export markets will open up for our producers, so that fruit, meat and other commodities can find consumers in far-off destinations.
Fanie de Villiers – Copy editor

This has been a challenging year for everyone in the agriculture sector. Yet, through it all, we‘ve held our heads high and served the sector with pride and passion.

Looking ahead to the new year, I hope to see South Africa‘s water supply challenges become a thing of the past, input costs reduced, and inefficiencies at our ports resolved once and for all.

To our readers, the Farmer‘s Weekly team and, most importantly, our country‘s farmers – big and small – I wish you a wonderful festive season and a happy and prosperous 2025.
Jenna van der Walt – Deputy editor

May it rain until your dams are full,
may the sun shine until your fruit is ripe,
and may your tractors start despite the diesel price.

The power found between the pages of a book or magazine is formidable for the reader and writer alike.

I enjoy doing research and writing about the industry I have come to love over many years.

I hope that you, our readers, will continue to embrace this opportunity to empower yourselves with knowledge in the year to come.

May you have a blessed festive season with experiences that will carry you through 2025‘s good and challenging times.
Magda du Toit – Freelance journalist

To South Africa‘s farmers, thank you for your support and loyalty throughout the year. Your perseverance inspires us daily, and we are privileged to tell your stories.

We wish you a prosperous season ahead – may the rain arrive when it is invited, but not overstay its welcome.

May your yields surpass expectations, and the markets see the value in your produce and reward you abundantly.

Most of all, may your passion for feeding the nation never waiver, because without you, every plate in South Africa, and millions abroad, would be empty.
