“I decided to buy my first Ankole cattle because they are such unique animals with lovely horns. They are also very fertile and hardy,” he says.

Van Rensburg’s breed policy is to produce a balanced Ankole with good horns and sufficient meat, and cows must also raise a calf annually.

“The Ankole can be used in a crossbreeding programme. I have crossed Ankole with Romagnola and Santa Grertrudis, giving me a strong maternal line with good temperament, hardiness, fertility, and easy calving,” he says.

“Ankole crosses are also more disease-resistant. The cows are very effective at protecting their calves against predators. If you use an Ankole bull to open big-breed heifers, you won’t have any calving problems.”
