How can you increase sustainability when it comes to soil matters?
Some traditional agricultural practices, both on a small and large scale, lead to severe soil degradation over time and are not climate change resilient.
Intensive tillage can often result in a greater loss of soil organic matter and available soil moisture, it creates poor soil structure and causes increased runoff and soil erosion.
There are however conservation agricultural practices that can turn this situation around and make producers more sustainable.
In this week’s episode of Tech Terrain, Tony Ndoro talks to Dr Hendrik Smith from Grain SA about the principles of conservation agriculture and how it can be applied in different production regions, as well as a visit to the diversified farmer, Cocky Mokoka on his farm, to hear about his journey to greater sustainability and profitability.
